It is with great thanks to James A. Honey that this volume
was ever compiled and eventually published in 1910.
I remember as a child attending Infant and Junior School at
Westville in South Africa during the 1960’s and being told
some of these stories in class.
It is doubtful that Westville Infant School or Westville Junior
school (now Westville Junior Primary and Westville Senior
Primary) still have an original volume and it is unknown if
these stories are still told in schools around South Africa.
We aim to remedy this.
It is therefore only fitting that this unique volume of South
African Folk Tales be resurrected and brought back to life
almost a century after they were first published so that they
can benefit those South African children who, for a myriad of
reasons, would not normally receive a full education.
As such - a percentage of the profit from the sale of this book
will be donated to the Scholarship program at Westville
Boys High School* (Durban, South Africa) where gifted
but underprivileged young South Africans are given
the opportunity of a full education.

* Westville Boys High School, just outside Durban South Africa,
is a member of the International Forum of Leading Schools (the IFLS).
This forum is chaired by the Head Master of Eton, Tony Little,
and includes leading schools invited from the various continents
to provide a global perspective in the interests of promoting
educational excellence.
The Forum is driven by the European Union Education Foundation.
Westville Boys’ High was selected by IFLS and Cheer to provide a
voice from Africa. Headmaster Trevor Hall formed part of a panel
at the recent ILFS conference in Xi’an, China, which presented
ideas on how to practically implement programmes to nurture
initiative, creativity and independence in high school students.
Other members of the panel were: Tony Little (Eton, UK),
Stephen Murray (University School, USA), Martin Kneath
(Regents School, Bangkok), Gabrielle Steinbach (Schiffstad,
Germany), Hang Kim Hoo (NUS, Singapore).
